The Birds - A Fairy Tale
“How tender is the silent wing that flies, so small and so unshaken”
A mysterious tale about a small migratory seabird who attends to the terrestrial needs of a human child and a narrative exploring humanity’s longing for transformation. Inspired by the decay of spiritual connection since the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the tale considers the guides offered us by the natural world to lead us back to our original knowing. Written with poetic beauty, featuring linocut illustrations by Sally, and before the backdrop of an ecological disaster for migratory birds, the tale urges for a renewed covenant with all life.
As a unique small run offset-printed art book, The Birds - A Fairy Tale is designed by Sally as a late 19th century ephemeral children’s publication with soft covers and is hand bound by her with waxed linen thread. A letterpress edition is currently being handset by Sally, due for completion in late 2025.
There are four different book cover colours to choose from, as seen in the second photo of this listing. A description of each colour is written below to also help with choice. The book cover papers are Canson mi Teintes cotton papers made in France and have a felt-like quality to the touch. The Birds- A Fairy Tale is produced in Melbourne on Kulin Country.
Praise from readers of The Birds ~
“Your book joins our library of classics, next to Kahlil Gibran and Wendell Berry. Thanks for the love and care you have put into crafting these rich and illustrative word-images. I finished it both elated and encouraged, and saddened and distraught. All at once. You have been courageous in pushing us (the readers) along in our journey. The call to be transformed. Overwhelmingly lovely and monstrously terrifying. Well done. Captivating, beautiful, poetic, unexpected. A ferociously fine tale.” ~ Nick
“‘The Birds! So it is a bathing of the senses. It is sensational in the true meaning of the word. I couldn’t stop reading all those perfect words, poured over every beautiful illustration…” ~ Anne
“Holding this book is like holding a treasure” ~ Lindesay
